Older Bakersfield attics rarely meet today's standard.

A lot of attics in Kern County were insulated decades ago, and what is up there has settled, been disturbed by work or pests, or was never deep enough to begin with. In triple-digit heat that attic becomes a radiator over every room in the building. A.S.I. tops up or replaces attic insulation, seals the air leaks underneath it, and insulates crawl spaces and walls, for homes and for commercial buildings.

Blown-in, batts or spray foam

Blown-in insulation is loose fiber blown across the attic floor to an even depth. It fills around wiring, blocking and odd framing better than batts and is the usual way to bring an existing attic up to standard. California's Title 24 energy code puts Central Valley attics in the R-38 to R-49 range, depending on whether it is new construction or an upgrade, and that is the range we insulate to. Batts are pre-cut blankets that fit standard framing. They are a good choice for open walls, new construction and spaces where loose fill will not stay put. Spray foam goes on the underside of the roof deck instead of the attic floor. It brings ducts and equipment inside the insulated space, which matters in Bakersfield because so many HVAC systems and ducts sit in the attic. It costs more, and it is often worth it.

How an attic job runs.

Look first, seal second, insulate third.

Inspect

Depth, condition and type of what is there, plus air leaks and anything suspect.

Remove

Damaged or contaminated insulation comes out when it needs to.

Air seal

Penetrations, top plates and hatches sealed before new insulation.

Insulate

Blown-in, batts or foam to the agreed depth, and the space left clean.

Air sealing and crawl spaces

Insulation slows heat; it does not stop air. Gaps around light fixtures, top plates, flues and attic hatches let conditioned air escape into the attic, and we seal those before new insulation goes down, so the money you spend on insulation is not leaking out underneath it. Crawl spaces get the same attention: insulation between the floor joists, sealing at the rim, and a moisture barrier over the soil where it is needed. If anything we remove turns out to be contaminated or suspect, such as rodent-soiled material, mold or old vermiculite, we handle it properly, because abatement is the other half of what we do.

What attic insulation costs

Price depends on the attic's square footage, how deep the insulation needs to go, whether old or damaged insulation has to come out first, how much air sealing is needed, and the material you choose. Blown-in on an open attic floor is the most economical; roofline spray foam costs the most and does the most. We look before we quote, measure what is there, and give you a free written estimate. If the attic only needs a top-up, we will tell you so.

Attic insulation questions.

What homeowners and building managers ask us most.

How much attic insulation do I need in Bakersfield?

California's energy code puts Central Valley attics in the R-38 to R-49 range, which is well over a foot of blown-in fiber. If yours is far short of that, a top-up usually pays off quickly in the summer.

Should old insulation be removed first?

If it is wet, rodent-soiled, moldy or smoke-damaged, yes. If it is clean and dry, new insulation can often go right on top. We tell you which after we look.

Blown-in or batts?

For an existing attic floor, blown-in almost always does a better job because it fills around everything. Batts suit open walls and new framing.

Do you insulate crawl spaces?

Yes, including insulation between the floor joists and a moisture barrier over the soil where the crawl space needs one.

Do you install crawl space moisture barriers?

Yes. A barrier over the soil keeps ground moisture out of the crawl space and the floor above, and we install it with the insulation.

Is old vermiculite insulation dangerous?

It can be. Much of the vermiculite sold in the U.S. came from a mine contaminated with asbestos, so it should be tested before anyone disturbs it. We arrange the test and, if needed, remove it safely.

How long does an attic job take?

Most homes are done in a day, or two if old insulation is coming out first.

Do you insulate commercial buildings too?

Yes. Most of our work is commercial and industrial, and we bring the same crews to homes and small buildings.
